Diabetic-Friendly Cookbooks

I probably will use most recipes on-line, but it would useful to have some Diabetic-Friendly Cookbooks on hand. to help with meal planning for the week and weeks to come.  I always look for used books first (helps to me more environmentally friendly) and if I find them at a thrift store that have a charitable status then its worth it in the end.  Just a warning!  If you get used books, wrap them in a plastic bag and put in the freezer for 24 hrs to make sure you get rid of bed bugs that sometimes make the pages a good breeding home.  I'll be listing other recipe formats found in Magazines, EBooks, Apps and of course books.

Diabetic Sandwich RecipesUsu

http://forecast.diabetes.org/magazine/features/making-super-sandwiches

Usually I like eating sandwiches for lunch but it is something I can make make many and freeze for the rest of the week.  I make very boring sandwiches currently and break down and buy on the go which is usually not very healthy with pizza and very large servings of take out food.   These recipes will also help with weekly planning for the whole family to contribute in making and learn how to have a balanced meal.  Recipes include: burgers, wraps, burritos, sandwiches, pockets, and pitas....

Diabetic Vegetarian, Vegan & Raw Food Recipes

Cheese Baked Peppers with Linguine

I was vegetarian in the mid nineties for four years and began to eat meat again but it was only a few times a week.  Then 3 years ago, my step-son became a vegetarian and my husband and I joined him in changing our diet.  However, I still fish a few times a week because it was highly suggest by my family doctor and Rheumatologist but did not mind because I like my salmon, tuna, sardines and many others.  I would be called a Pescetarian.  You can find more information on Wikipedia for Pescetarianism,  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pescatarian), Vegetarianism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetarianism), Veganism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veganism) and Raw Foodism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_foodism).   In other posts I'll talk more in detail about these diets because they can incorporated into your diet in some way,  I don't think that Raw Foodism can be used for Diabetics but I don't know much about it yet.  Though I have ate from recipes that are considered vegetarian, vegan, and raw food, enjoying all meals.

Diabetic Crock Pot (Slow Cooker) Recipes

https://pinterest.com/diabeticliving/diabetic-slow-cooker-recipes/

I think its time to bring down my crock pot, dust it off and wash it because it is another tool that can fit it into our food planning.  In the past I usually used it for casseroles and stews but heard it can be useful for many recipes.  Some of the link titles will be similar to previous posts but will give a good insight of the use that crock pots/slow cookers can be used for cooking through out the day and being able to pack some of the left overs (freeze them) and eat them on 'No Cook' days.  :)

Diabetic casseroles, chili, soups & stews

http://www.grouprecipes.com/110402/creamy-vegetable-casserole---diabetic-friendly.html

I used to make a lot of casseroles, soups and stews, and found that its usually a very complete meals and usually fills me up quickly.  Usually never made chili but looking at it as an alternative for vegetarian recipes for the family.  They are also great to make in bulk and freeze left overs for days that we don't want to cook.  Plus, it helps keep us away from ordering food and relying on packaged foods which has lots of preservatives, high in sugar and fats.

Diabetic Side Dish Recipes

http://www.bhg.com/recipes/healthy/diabetic/diabetic-side-dishes/#page=2

I probably would not make side dishes that often because of time but maybe in the future our family can fit it in with our upcoming meal planning project.  My step-son is helping with meal preparation and this would be a great area for him to start making meals.  Plus, side dishes will help with times when we have gatherings of friends & family for birthdays, holidays and just to get together times.  I can use some of these side dishes for small meals like lunch to make it more interesting than sandwiches & soup.

Diabetic Condiment, Dips, Sauce & Spreads Recipes

http://www.diabetesselfmanagement.com/recipes/Dips-and-Spreads/

I personally don't use many sauces or condiments when I eat but since marrying my husband (a big sauce user), I've started using dips, sauces and condiments.  I still make sure that I use them sparingly on my foods but if they are low in carbohydrates & fats then I might be more liberal in using more.

Diabetic Salads & Dressings

http://www.cooksrecipes.com/diabetic-recipes/diabetic-salad-recipes.html

Salads are easier to eat with others especially my husband who luvs it almost equally to chips. :)  I am doing much better in including Salads at Supper time but usually eat the leafy part first and finish with the better additional ingredients like tomatoes, cucumbers & peppers (especially the red ones)  I have not made other types of salads yet like: pasta, grain salads and the many other tasty options.  The following list of websites will include these salads, as an addition to our family food planning, being made at the beginning of the week and spreading it out during the week.  Less work that way! :)

Diabetic Main Dishes Recipes

http://allrecipes.asia/recipes/diabetic-recipes.aspx

The following recipes will include mostly Main Courses including cheese and some vegetarian/vegan dishes.   I will have a whole separate post on Vegetarian, Vegan and I'll try finding some Raw Diet recipes to be included.  For now I'll be trying my best to post a variety of meat (poultry, beef, pork, lamb & wild meats) and Seafood (mostly fish and some shellfish recipes).  I am a Pescetarian, meaning that I will eat seafood but also find that I can use alternatives for other meat dishes with beans, tofu, and other meat alternative.  So all the recipes listed below will have some type of meat in it, so there is no confusion for the carnivores that might visit this blog.... :)

Diabetic Dessert Recipes

http://pinterest.com/nancygou/recipes-diabetic-desserts/

My favourite recipes to make would be desserts to add at the end of a great meal and not the whole meal. :)  This is another area like beverages which will get help from natural sweeteners (i.e. stevio & xylitol) or low amounts of cane sugar & honey.  Including whole ingredients like fruits and natural ingredients like cocoa powder & dark chocolate will help with the caloric and carbohydrate intake.  I do not like using made made sweeteners (sugar substitute) like aspartame, splenda and saccharin because they make me feel more hungry.  This happens to me and not sure about other diabetics, but I usually don't use additional sweeteners but will make an exception if their is no natural sweetness lke fruits.  Just a warning that many of the recipes are high in saturated fat so be careful with your portions. Yummhhh!....  Looking forward to seeing these mouth watering recipes. :)

Diabetic Bread Recipes

http://www.americandiabetes.com/diabetic-recipes/breads-rolls/cornbread-biscuits
I may try incorporating 'Bread Recipes' once a month as a future goal as a money saver and knowing what exactly is in the recipe and that will help me balance my sugars more. This goal will probably be start in six months to a year because of current time and energy to include this in my lifestyle around food, diet and exercise.  These links will be used in the future but hopefully helpful to other as well. :)

Diabetic Breakfast/ Brunch Recipes

http://www.thediabeticskillet.com/recipes/2011/02/03/diabetic-friendly-breakfast-ideas-to-start-your-day/

In the last month I've been able to start eating breakfast again but it is still missing many points of proper planning of covering many of the food groups.  I still only have things like: cereal, coffee and not much else, knowing it does not give me a complete diabetic diet for the whole day.  So, I really hope that seeing these links twill help me meet my goals for: how, when, and what I will eat.

Diabetic Non-Alcoholc Beverage Recipes

http://www.diabetesselfmanagement.com/recipes/Beverages/

I really like to have more non-alcohol recipes for beverages because its very hard to get motivated to try beverages outside of water, tea, and coffee.  I do not drink alcohol beverages anymore, because of conflicts with medications I'm on but don't miss drinking them.any ways.  I hope to find some beverages that don't have artificial sweeteners in them but will list them if I find them.  I'll try to use alternative sweeteners like Stevia and Xylitol or using small quantities of cane sugar and honey or the best things: whole fruits & veggies.   Remember the carbohydrate intake... Wish me luck! :)

Diabetic Recipes

http://www.cooksrecipes.com/category/diabetic.html

I have a few diabetic recipe books but found its way easier to look online and get an idea what to make from scratch.  I usually don't need to follow recipes anymore but I still get some great ideas to follow with diabetic diet guidelines.  Later on I'll find links that will talk about what is unique and not so unique with the diabetic diet.  Have Fun Surfing!!! There is no difference in the diet for either type I, type II or gestational diabetes.

The next few days I'll be looking for specific online diabetic recipes under: appetizers, beverages, breakfast/brunch, breads. desserts. fish/seafood, main dishes, meat, salads, sauces/condiments, side dishes, snacks, soup/stews/chili, and vegetarian/vegan.

The best sic doctors anywhere!

This is a good way to learn a little about myself and the goals that I will be setting to improve my mental and physical health.  I have already met a few of these goals and then others I have re-introduce into my daily routine and make them habits once more.  The areas which I have already met is drinking water which is usually done through my water bottle and tea but know there should be some more improvement.  I am pretty close to have rest full sleep with between 8 to 10 hours but I am using medication to help me but hope to cut back to 1/2 a pill and then none by the end of spring.  I have a pretty good diet (following diabetic guidelines) and eating 3 meals a day with two snack periods which includes most of the food groups but lack in veggies most days.

The areas which I'm really lacking in because of anxiety are: sunshine (when we get it in Vancouver) but use a SAD light to help, air (stale inside air does not count) and exercise.  I use to go for walks a lot which helped me with sunshine, fresh air and moderate exercise because I use to go for 1/2hr or more.  I would like to improve my exercise by doing things that is greatly needed like stretching, chair exercises (to help with balance) and go to a community center to use facilities that I can use a stationary bike and go swimming.

I will have to tell you about some of the challenges that I have with seeing some of those great free doctors of mine that will help with my visits to my family doctor and Specialists.  Wish me the best! :)
